My Rating: ★★★★★
Man in a Veil (비밀의 남자) is a South Korean daily makjang, soap opera, or ridiculous drama that aired Sep 2020 – Feb 2021.
About
After a childhood accident, Tae Poong has a learning disability and remains a 7 year old until his adult years. He’s caught between two sisters, warm hearted Yu Jung who waits for Tae Poong, and Yu Ra, Yu Jung’s twin sister who is completely different from her and uses Tae Poong for her own desires to become rich.
Cast
Kang Eun Tak (강은탁) aka Shin Seul Gi]He plays Lee Tae Pung. I believe the actor was nominated for an award for his permanence in this role.
Uhm Hyun Kyung (엄현경)
She has been in other makjangs such as The Second Husband, The Brave Young Su Jeong and the latest Our Happy Days.
Lee Chae Young (이채영)
Involved in football orientated TV shows, her last makjang was Woman in a Veil.
Lee Shi Kang (이시강)
Seen him in a few shows including Because of You.
There were many celebrities, playing support roles, in this show, too many to mention here.
Review
This was the first makjang, daily soap, I ever saw. Even though others are brilliant nothing can beat Man in a Veil.
Lee Jung Dae was the screenwriter and typical for this and Woman in a Veil episode 20 saw a big change in store or cliffhanger. He also wrote Mysterious Personal Shopper which I believe was another memorable makjang.
Absolutely brilliant performances from Kang Eun Tak and Lee Chae Young. Lee Shii Kang to no surprised played the totty of the show. Uhm Hyun Kyung was more or less the victim with the evil sister.
The story about the child was really very well written and have never seen this addressed on other shows.
Like any makjang there is a ping pong of revenge and the criminal continuing to get away with murder until the bitter end.
The first episode was great at catching the audiences attention emotionally to Tae Poong Mothers health condition. The last episode expectedly saw the criminal being convicted but to my surprise a tragic health condition was revealed. One major cast member is the hero at the end tragically losing his life, you will have to watch the show to find out who.
There is some action, definitely romance but plenty of engaging high drama.
Summary
Some days I watched 3 episodes a day and I regretted it ended so quickly, I wish I took more time with it. I re-watch some episodes now and again, that’s how good the show was.
Other reviewers will say “it’s completely unhinged” to “best show ever”, I agree with the later. It was brilliant.
Where To Watch
